K-5 Academic Program

At The Island School, we believe that learning should be joyful, challenging, and fun. Our talented faculty use research-backed instruction techniques to deliver hands-on, meaningful learning experiences for the diverse population of learners in their classrooms.

Math

In math we utilize the Bridges curriculum, used by schools across the country, which utilizes manipulatives and an inquiry approach to develop students’ mathematical skills and number sense which are central to their growth as mathematicians. For students who need acceleration in math we offer differentiation that can result in completing middle school math.

Reading

In reading we focus on the skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension using a variety of methods and curriculum including Heggerty and Wired for Reading curriculum. This provides a multi-sensory approach to understanding linguistics and developing reading, spelling and vocabulary skills. We also offer reading intervention for students lagging in their skills.

Science

In science, our teachers balance classroom learning with hands-on experiences on our forested campus and at the nearby Bainbridge Island Native Food Forest. The curriculum emphasizes project-based learning through studies of dinosaurs, birds, salmon, and stewardship projects to maintain and improve the food forest. Additionally, fourth and fifth grade students utilize the Mystery Science curriculum, a standards-aligned, inquiry-based program that engages students with interactive lessons and hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding of scientific concepts and practices.

Writing

In writing we utilize a variety of strategies to engage students in these complex skills. We use Heggerty Writing (grades K-3) and Mystery Writing (grades 4 & 5) to guide our writing instruction and engage students in the writing process. For the act of writing we use Handwriting without Tears to develop students’ penmanship.

Social Studies

For social studies our whole school community studies the culture (history, geography, language, food, traditions and more) of another country in the month of March for our annual Cultural Study. We also use the Pollyanna racial literacy curriculum to develop student understanding of the world around them and how to navigate it in a just and equitable way.

Social-Emotional Learning

At The Island School, personal development and social skills are viewed as teachable, learnable competencies that everyone can work on and improve. We approach this essential work through all school meetings, whole class instruction, small group learning and even individual work. Research shows that intentional integration of a formal SEL program positively impacts student learning, reduces individual anxiety, and creates an overall more healthy school environment.
