About our Campus

Our campus brings the outside in with open-beamed ceilings, glass-lined hallways and a plant-lush center courtyard. Our new building, completed in 2001, is modern and sleek, but also kid-friendly with youth art lining the corridors and cozy spaces for reading or resting.

Computers
We have a general library computer as well as a mobile computer center housing laptops for 10 students. This is mainly used between 4th and 5th grade. We offer beginning keyboarding in 3rd and 4th grades and a computer course.

Library
The library is open to all The Island School families. Children and parents may access the library whenever they need it. The library is stocked, maintained, and organized by parent volunteers. These volunteers act as the school librarians. We have a sunken library that opens onto the courtyard in the center of the building. Students have "library day" once a week and checkout a book each week. While the students sit on cushions from around the library, a volunteer will read them a story during this once a week library time as well. The library is ever growing!

Art Room
Students have art 1-2 times a week. They learn about all realms of artistry. Our Art room is complete with a kiln, baker's racks, art racks (to hold children's artwork- so they stay clean, crisp and always fresh), tables, chairs, counters all around, and supplies galore. The art room is an amazing place for our students to create and learn.

Physical Education Shed and Playfields
We have a covered play shed available for rainy weather; otherwise students participate in Physical Education classes 1 time a week outdoors on the playfield.

Play equipment and the Woods
During recesses, students play on our three new play equipment structures, which were installed in 2002. If they're not on the play structures, they are playing in the play shed, the field, Lake Leak, or in the woods. The Island School is nestled in the woods, and students are free to romp in the fenced-in woods behind our main building and play yard.

Language Learning Specialist Office
We have a language specialist who provides remedial support for children who are experiencing speech, language or academic difficulties. The school hires her to work closely with classroom teachers supporting the child's regular classroom work. If a child needs support, which required him or her to work one-on-one or in a small group with a specialist, parents work out financial arrangements with the specialist directly.

Counselor's Office
We have a counselor available two days a week to work with children, families and staff on a scheduled or drop-in basis.

Classrooms and
Break-Out Rooms

Each grade has its own classroom. A break-out room is in 1st grade, between 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms and also between 4th and 5th grade classrooms.

Administrative Offices
The Head of School, the Business Manager and the Administrative Assistant for the school are all located just inside the main entrance to the school.
