Guidelines for Behavior

At The Island School, we understand that the children with whom we work are at different points in their social and emotional development. Though we handle social difficulties as individually as possible, we observe the following general procedures:

  • We encourage students to work out conflicts themselves as is developmentally appropriate. If an issue is not resolved, teachers will address the conflict in a timely fashion. If the incident involves enough students, a whole class discussion of the problem may be led by a teacher. When the problem involves children from more than one class, we may hold combined class meetings.
  • Those engaged in unsafe or inappropriate behavior may be asked to take a time-out. This time-out will be handled in a manner found suitable by the teacher.
  • Those who are disruptive in class are generally given clear reminders of classroom expectations. They may be asked to leave the classroom for periods of time deemed appropriate by their classroom teacher.
  • If a child´s behavior is deemed to be continually unsafe or dangerous to him/herself or others, the child may be sent home. A child may be asked to leave the school if the school does not feel it can guarantee a safe environment for the child or those around him or her.

Guiding Principles for Behavior
At The Island School, we believe adults and children do their best learning and living together when respect and consideration for others are valued and honored by all members of the community. With this in mind, we outline our Guiding Principles for Behavior at The Island School.

Respect
We come to school to learn how to be a respectful and considerate member of a larger community. Tolerate differences, use good manners, consider the feelings of others, listen to others when they are talking to you, wait your turn to speak.

Responsibility
We come to school to learn how to take responsibility for our thoughts and actions towards others, our school, and the world. Think before you act. Pick up and clean up after yourself. Take good care of the classroom, schoolbooks and supplies, and the building and yard.

Safety
We come to school to work and learn in an atmosphere, which is physically and emotionally safe. Keep your body and words under control. Do not threaten, hurt or intimidate others.

Fairness
We come to school to learn how to listen to others, to take turns and share, and to play by the rules. Listen to others. Learn to compromise. Keep an open mind. Take turns, and treat smaller and younger children with care.

Caring
We come to school to learn kindness and compassion towards others. Be kind. Forgive people when they make a mistake. Express your thanks when people are good to you. Apologize when you’re wrong. Help people who need it.

Trustworthiness
We come to school to learn how to act with integrity. Be honest, tell the truth, and be reliable so others can depend on you.

At The Island School, we understand that everyone makes mistakes. We all strive to use our mistakes as opportunities for growth, and by our continual efforts, to create a happy and supportive community
