Guidelines
For Kindergarten: First consideration is given to siblings of past or present The Island School students provided they meet our other guidelines. We tend to give preference to older kindergarten applicants; that is, those 5-year olds whose birthdays fall before June. We are flexible in this regard. Summer birthdays are considered on a case-by-case basis.
For older grades: A child who has successfully completed a kindergarten program elsewhere may apply for first grade placement at The Island School. Children applying to grades 1-5 must spend a day visiting the school, referred to as a day visit. Teacher referral forms are required as part of the application process. Upon acceptance, academic records are necessary to keep the student's records current.
Procedure
We ask that interested families contact us either in the fall or after the open house in January, so that we may send out an application. Once we send out the application, we then schedule a meeting between our Head of School and the parents or guardians of an interested family. This interview is informal and includes a thorough explanation of our curriculum, a tour of our campus, and plenty of time to ask questions and have questions answered. Once the application is received along with the non-refundable application fee, and the interview is complete, the Kindergarten application process is finished. However, if you are applying for any grade from 1st to 5th, we require a day visit be scheduled for your child to spend an entire day in their current grade class at The Island School. This is a day for observation and for our teachers to help determine if your child is a good fit for our school and the class they would be joining. Once the day visit is complete we also ask for a teacher referral form to be completed by their current teacher and then upon acceptance a copy of their academic records. This then completes the 1st-5th-grade application process.
Open House
We offer an Open House the last Wednesday of every January from 7-9 pm. The staff presents an overview of the school and interested parents have an opportunity to sign up to visit during school hours.
Application Deadline
First consideration will be given to application forms received by the deadline in late March. Later applications will be accepted. Observations and student visits where appropriate, must be completed before an application will be considered. Acceptances are mailed by early to mid April.
